Together we can make social change happen.

It's a good thing, too. Our generation has some big challenges to tackle - from global warming to the rising cost of college, from homelessness to our collapsing health care system. It won't be easy, but by acting together we can find solutions.

That's where we come in. Here at ConnPIRG (Connecticut Public Interest Research Group), we organize college students to solve some of the world's most pressing public interest problems.

ConnPIRG is an independent statewide student directed and student funded organization that works on issues like environmental protection, consumer protection, and hunger and homelessness. For 30 years students with their campus ConnPIRG chapters have been making a real difference in people's lives and winning concrete changes to build a better world.  UConn students are already making huge impacts. Just one of the many impactful campaigns that ConnPIRG works on is stopping the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms. The overuse of antibiotics creates 'superbugs' which can cause illnesses that can't be cured.  This increases the risk that the nest time you or a loved one gets sick, our life saving medicines won't work.  To prevent this from happening we need the restaurants that buy from factory farms to call for change.  Just recently, ConnPIRG helped convince McDonalds to stop selling chicken raised on antibiotics!  (This is a huge victory for public health!).  And now we are calling on Subway, the world's largest fast food chain to stop selling all meat raised on antibiotics.  The passion and drive of students has already lead to one great victory for public health and we know that with enough support, Subway will follow as well as many other restaurants.  Victories such as the McDonald's victory could not be done without student support and leadership.

ConnPIRG gives students the skills and opportunity to practice effective citizenship. Both here on campus and out in the world, we mobilize students to investigate big social problems, come up with practical solutions, convince the media and public to pay attention, and get decision-makers to act.
