The first week of classes have passed at UConn Hartford and the days are starting to feel like old hat again, but there are more exciting things than ever to get involved in! The ConnPIRG chapter at UConn Hartford has also just finished it's first week of student outreach and now is the time to learn more and get involved on campus and with some great campaigns to protect public health, reduce the cost of textbooks and so much more! This week at UConn Hartford we on the ConnPIRG team are looking to take some action on two exciting campaigns; our textbooks campaign and our Antibiotics campaign and we want you to join us.
Have you ever wondered about the price of your textbooks and why they are so high? In the past thirty years the cost of textbooks has increased by 1041%. Five publishers control 80% of the publishing market, enabling them to control the cost of textbooks and hold students captive. A clear and easy solution to this problem is to promote open source textbooks, a solution which PIRG has backed for over ten years. Online, open-sourced textbooks are peer reviewed and faculty written like a traditional textbook but they are published under an open license, making them free to download and cost efficient to print. Stop by our table on Tuesday from 12:00PM-2:00PM and to learn more about open source textbooks and to take action to promote online textbooks!
What better way to start off the new year than to take a stand for more affordable textbooks! Keep your eyes peeled for our next blog post where we will talk about our next upcoming table and our lead campaign, to stop the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms!
