Campus Organizer: Alex Peebles
UCONNPIRG is a statewide, student-directed, and student-funded advocacy group in CT. We have a 40-year track-record of standing up to powerful special interests and winning concrete victories on campaigns to fight climate change, make college more affordable, and protect public health.
What makes us effective is that students at UConn vote every 3 years to continue funding our advocacy work through the $5 per semester waivable fee. We pool these resources with our CONNPIRG Chapters across the state and hire our own professional staff like advocates, lawyers and organizers. Between our work here on campus and our advocates representing student concerns in Hartford and D.C. we win real results.
Last year, our efforts to reduce the cost of textbooks for students paid off. We got a commitment from the university and passed legislation at the statewide level to promote free online textbooks that will save students hundreds of dollars. On top of that, we helped make Connecticut the first state to adopt a Student Bill of Rights that will protect students with college loans from unfair rip offs. You may also know us from our voter registration efforts – we helped register 2,500 students in the 2016 elections and increased student turnout by over 20% !
This semester, our priority campaign is to stop the expansion of natural gas and construction of pipelines in the state and get CT on a pathway to 100 percent clean energy. We're working to convince elected leaders to only vote on policies that will get CT closer to running on 100 percent clean energy. We are also working to reduce the costs of textbooks on campus even more, get big money out of politics, alleviate hunger & poverty in our community, save the bees, and ban plastic water bottles on campus.
