Thanks to everyone who attended our annual Homelessness Sleepout on the quad last night! This was one of our biggest ones yet and it could not have been possible without all of you. The event is designed to raise awareness about homelessness in our community.
For several weeks now ConnPIRGers have been collecting hundreds of boxes, which ended up spilling out of our office. We brought all of the boxes onto the quad yesterday and teams began building their "homes" for the night around 6 PM. We then took a break from building and listened to guest speakers State Rep. Greg Haddad and No Freeze Hospitality Center director Leigh Duffy. We followed their remarks with a candlelight vigil open forum for students to discuss their relationship to and associations with homelessness.
The evening concluded with several musical and acting performances by UConn students around a bonfire. The event was attended by roughly 50 students and close to 20 spent the night on the quad. Again, I want to thank everyone who helped or showed up!
